Two Christmases

Yes, that’s right, we only had two Christmas celebrations this year – one at home on the 21st and one with the Zoellners on the 25th. We chose not to go to Peter’s mom’s this year because apparently the stomach flu is going around again, and we decided to avoid that this time around (we were all violently ill last year, so much so that we had to stay in Milwaukee an extra day. That was also the cause of Sam throwing up on our dear friends’ carpet (dear friends who we only see about once a year, to boot!). So we are very wary of a repeat this year!)

But we did have our own little family Christmas at home, with the usual secret decorating by Peter all day Saturday and surprising the kids after supper, followed by opening the presents Sunday morning (and actually making it to church relatively on time, too!) For the record, Sam was not as uber-thrilled about the completely amazingly awesome wolf quilt I made him as he obviously should have been, but it’s growing on him. (Which reminds me, I still have to finish making Josiah’s matching one . . . ) samquilt

The tool kit, however, was a unmitigated success (Sam’s been following me all week, asking, “So, Mom, got anything that needs hammering? Any screws loose?” Only the one in my head for buying that tool kit for you!) ;)

Hannah is thrilled with her new Bible and her remote-controlled tricked out VW Beetle. hbible

Naomi twisted my arm (ha!) into making Monster Cookies with her and her new cookie scoop and hot pad on Sunday afternoon, pc210101

Elaina walks around shining everyone in the eyes with her flashlight shaped like a lion that roars when you turn it on, pc200064

and Josiah is figuring out his shape-sorting barn (with a little help from Hannah – she’s such a good big sister!) sorter-barn

And of course all three girls have worn their new PJs and Christmas socks every single day since they got them!

On Christmas Eve we all headed down to my parents’ house, where we had a relaxed evening (I even got to go to the Candlelight service at my sister’s church, where she led the choir and her husband sang a solo, and her son lit the candles on the giant Advent Calendar).

Then it was Christmas Day, day of the the big party. Since I have six brothers and sisters, and all of them come with their spouses and families, it is a pretty big party – so my Mom reserves the cafeteria at her office, and we have the party there. It works out really well. This year they got it remodeled, so we had to figure things out a bit, but it went pretty much without a hitch (my only complaint is that the tile floors are awful when they get even the slightest bit wet – which they definitely were, since it was snowing buckets outside while we were hauling the food in. I slipped, while carrying Josiah (don’t worry, he’s fine, he wasn’t even scared), and banged my knee pretty badly. I think it’s still a little swollen, and lots of pretty colors!)

We decided not to do a gift exchange between the adults this year, and so just Grandma and Grandpa gave gifts to the little ones, but I cheated a little bit and gave all of the wives a copy of the cookbook I made for Jessica’s wedding gift (hey, it was all typed out, why not?), and Kirsten gave me a simply smashing chicken apron (modelled here by Elaina, who wore it for the entire party) and all of my kids got funky animal hats (Elaina’s is supposed to be a butterfly – I think? Some kind of bug, anyway, for my Elainabug) :)

But mostly it was the fun get-together-and-gorge-fest that Zoellner family Christmases always are :) and a good time was had by all, as usual.

Then of course we all headed back to my parents’ for the after-party (which makes me laugh, since we have the party at the cafeteria because there are too many of us to fit in the house, but then we all squish into the house anyway!)

On Friday we went to Hortonville to visit my girlfriends from high school and their kids (Sarah’s dad let us use the gym at the school where he teaches – what a genius idea!) and then chilled out the rest of the day, and then Saturday (which was supposed to be our day to celebrate Christmas with the Westendorfs) we drove home. The whole week was plagued with nasty weather, but we were blessed with a safe drive both ways (as were my siblings from Minnesota – for which we are very grateful!)

And now we have all day Sunday to recombobulate and get back into my nice, comfy groove again (Ok, yeah, I know, it’s really a rut, but I like it . . .) :)

Christmas Survey

Here’s the latest Christmas survey that’s going around; I thought it might be fun to share:

1. Favorite Christmas cookie: Chocolate Spritz (I just made another batch yesterday!)

2. Favorite Christmas carol: O Holy Night

3. Favorite Christmas song (not religious): Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

4. Best Christmas gift ever: One year Peter got me a foosball table. That was so cool!

5. Worst Christmas gift ever: underwear

6. Most embarrassing Christmas gift ever: the Christmas before we got married, Peter got me a pair of earrings I had admired when I was out shopping with him some weeks before. In the weeks between, I had already bought myself a pair. (Peter has never gotten me jewelry since)

7. Ever been kissed under the mistletoe? Don’t think so.

8. Ever been Christmas caroling? Yup, many times – in college, a group of us went out in the neighborhood, and a guy actually came out on his front porch with his violin and played along with us. It was so neat!

Another time when I was a kid we went caroling at a nursing home, and I threw up on the girl in front of me. I don’t eat ham salad sandwiches anymore.

9. Real tree or artificial? Both. We have a little spinning white fiber optic tree we put up upstairs December 1st, and we get a real tree that we don’t put up (in the basement) until Christmas Eve (well, usually the weekend before, which is our “home” Christmas Eve, since we’ll be at Grandma’s for the real Christmas Eve)

10. What’s on top? Star (but not a blue plastic one with fiber optics, so Peter will never be truly happy) :)

11. Colored lights or white only: White for me, colored for Peter (the real tree in the basement always gets colored lights)
12. Favorite Christmas memory from childhood:  Singing “Glory to God the Angels Sing” in front of church, and having the adult choir come in from behind us for the refrain. It was so awe-inspiring and beautiful, I thought it must be what the real angels sounded like the first Christmas night – and I got to be a part of it!
13. Do you put up an Advent Wreath? (For those of you who don’t know what an advent wreath is, check out http://pastorstrey.wordpress.com/2008/11/28/advent-wreath-101/ )
No, my niece’s hair started on fire because of one a few years ago and scarred her face, and now I’m scared to have one until the kids are older. But I do like them.
14. How about an Advent Calendar (with or without chocolates)? Although I am partial to the ones with little chocolates for each day, the sugar Nazi in me says no. But my kids love our wooden one with different ornaments for each day.
15. Favorite Christmas tradition: Getting together at Peter’s mom’s place for Christmas Eve and talking together about God’s coming to earth and all that it means (although this gets harder every year as our kid to adult ratio gets more top-heavy!)

Clarification

*This picture really has nothing to do with this blog post, I just thought it was cute.

Mom: “Elaina, why are you standing in your crib crabbing?”

Elaina: “I’m not crabbing, I’m screaming!”

Homeschool Digression . . .

What started out as a cool learning experience:

(Yes, I knew they were going to do this – it was my idea!  Yet another electric knife died on me last night *sniff*)

Turned into (what else?) Sam turning yet another odd discarded item into a robot:

Winter Fun

hot-chocolate

Apologies, devoted readers, for the lag in posts lately – lots of houseguests, mild but wearying colds, and, frankly, crabbiness has kept me from writing.

But there has been fun – Saturday morning we woke up to a wonderland of snow, and took the opportunity to play outside (with Natalie and her boys, who were here for the weekend while Paul was hunting). I could only draw them back in again with promises of hot chocolate (an extremely special treat) which they enjoyed heartily (as you can tell by Elaina’s face!)

The other excitement last week was that I put up the upstairs Christmas decorations on Monday (December first). I was really not in the mood (I hurt my back lugging suitcases coming home from Thanksgiving – Peter’s asthma was acting up, so he couldn’t do it) but I had to do it so that we could start the Advent Calendar (one of the kids’ favorite Christmas traditions). Anyway, I ran the kids over to Debbie’s (we’ve always taken them to Jessica’s before, but now she’s too far away. *sniff*) and came back to decorate. Peter arrived just after I returned, so he carried all of the boxes upstairs while I got everything out. He manfully took over setting up the village (his favorite decoration anyway) while I did the rest. I was starting to get out of my funk (Peter had put on some Christmas CDs, once we found them – that always helps!) and we had gotten most of the decorations up when it was time to pick up the kids. Peter went to get them while I lit the candles and turned out all of the lights (swearing mightily at our little spinning angel thing, which would NOT stand up straight!!!)

But it was all worth it when the kids came home and saw it all:

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten so many hugs and “I love you Mom! Thank you so much!!” in my life. :) The older three each ran around calling out, “Look at this! I remember this!” while Elaina looked and looked with big eyes and a huge smile, and Josiah just walked around wondering what the big deal was.

(Gratuitous Naomi cuteness) :)

And of course we had to finish the night by playing The Nutcracker so that the kids could do the annual dance:

(Yes, it took a while to get this shot of them twirling – Hannah just walked up to me and asked, “What is that thing growing there?” Then she realized it was her hair!) :)
